Rosey the Baby Killer and other stories

Sometimes you think your life is shit. Sometimes your life is shit. Sometimes there's somebody who has had it worse than you. Bill Shields is one of those somebodies. This ex-Navy SEAL who fought in Vietnam has had the short end of the stick from the get go, and he spews it all out in powerful little punches. There's nothing held back in this collection and yet not many words are needed to explain. Here's a quick chunk:

My daughter Kren never forgave me for missing her birth. Our last phone call went like this:
"Kren?"
"Yes."
"You know who this is?"

Click.

She's not much of a phone bill & I'm not much of a father.

Shields has been farther into the sick darkness than many dare to fathom--before, during, and after Vietnam--and it's even more shocking that he's around to ramble about it. Take advantage of his descriptions of death and despair, and hope you never go through anything half as bad.
