The downtown Albuquerque scene is a great place to check out the local bands, local women, or just get hammered if 1. You grew up in a cave in the woods or 2. You've been recently divorced or heading in that direction. Seeing as how I fit both qualifications, I've been having a great summer (I think -- I really don't remember anything).
However, if your main objective is to see a variety of good music on a fairly reliable basis, there are really only two places to go. The Fabulous Dingo Bar located at 313 Gold SW (with two ATMs right next door for your drinking convenience, although they charge me $2.06 every time I use 'em--that's corporate America for you), and The Launchpad at 618 Central SW.
Both establishments act as patrons to the local bands (I guarantee that if they wont book you here it has nothing to do with politics, it's because you really suck!) as well as bringing in quite a few nationally touring bands of a wide variety of styles and genres. The bartenders, waiting staff, and busy persons at both places are courteous and friendly (if not, it's because you're being an ass and need to reevaluate your behavior).
This is unlike several other neighboring fratboy type joints who glare at anyone without plaid shirts, "beemers," and/or lots of money. Then again they might make an exception if you happen to be a girl without independent thought and/or large breasts. I'd tell you where these places are but I don't want to give them the free advertising. It'd be best just to take my word for it and stick with the two bars I mentioned.
I guess I got a little sidetracked there, did I mention that the Launchpad has great food if you were to, oh say, get the munchies for some reason (served until 1:00 am).
There are actually a few other places downtown that may have a worthwhile show every now and again but I've gotta save something to write about next issue.
I need this job bad, man.. .. .. I need a fix .. .. ...
See you at the bars--
Cheers,
