3/20/25: In the real Every couple of years Helene Cronin releases a set of rough-hewn country songs that speak plainly and carry a massive impact. Her voice rings clearly, an instrument that carries barely a hint of the tarnish of age. These songs probably fit best in the heyday of Rosanne Cash and Mary Chapin Carpenter (and especially Nanci Griffith), but Cronin sets her table proudly in the present.
The sound is warm, but never hot. After all, each of these songs is a conversation, often with the subject of the song itself. Cronin has a knack for saying a lot by saying a little, and she likewise keeps her musical arrangements simple as well. Another sterling set. Very few people make music like this these days, and it's a shame. Cronin knows exactly when to step on stage and when to leave. These songs are a testament to that courage and restraint. I anticipated something wonderful, and Cronin exceeded even those expectations. Settle in and sit a while.
