2/27/25:
Truly out and about

Olivares is one of the rampaging members of Tutupatu, a band that finds music in every conceivable noise. On this "solo" album, Olivares teams up with Berlin-based Vaz Oliver and meanders into the deep psychedelic electronic realm.

Indeed, when the loops really get going and the percussion hits just the right level of reverb, there's a strong element of dub as well. Ever wonder what the intersection of Krautrock, deep trance, space rock and dub might be? Probably not. I kinda doubt Olivares was thinking that way either, but he's kinda found the nexus nonetheless.

Not exactly abstract, but not fully structured, either. The hypnotic loops have that effect. The generally low-key sound belies a strong complexity in the composition. Each piece tends to be doing at least three things at once, and somehow they add up to a greater whole.

While one might expect a member of Tutupatu to be forward-thinking and adventurous, this set easily outpaces expectations. If you like your experimental electronic music to have a backbone (and not necessarily be electronic, for that matter), this set is for you. Dive in. No need to hold your breath.
