8/5/24:
A daze in the life

Brandon Kerrigan (he who is Care Again) spent ten years making this album (and, it appears, also painted the album cover). Back in the day music cognoscenti would call this laptop pop, except that there are plenty of analog instruments burbling along in the chaos. Younger listeners might throw this into the whole (modern) shoegaze movement, but Kerrigan is way too convoluted for that, even if the production does evoke that sort of thing.

As near as I can tell, Kerrigan comes up with the nuggets of his songs, folds them in on themselves and then calls it a day when he doesn't want to continue. A number of these songs clock in at under two minutes, while a fair number also surpass four. Consistency is not a hallmark.

Cool by me. I love one-person projects, because it's so much easier to grasp what the artist intended. Some of these songs are just going for feel (that would be many of the shorter one) and some go to great lengths to make a statement.

Yes, I have heard hundreds (actually, thousands) of projects like this. But few have both the musical curiosity and sheer will that Kerrigan demonstrates. Perhaps this will reach you, and perhaps it won't. Something this intensely personal can be a difficult listen, but when something catches, the brain blazes. Startling and moving.
