7/25/24:
Organic burbles

Malcolm MacLachlan released a first set of Fragments last summer, and he returns this year with a second. The two are closely related in concept and feel, and indeed are often referred to as a "double album" in many press notices.

Fragments, Vol. 2
(self-released)

MacLachlan has a clear affinity for the chilly techno tones of the early 80s, but when they're placed into a minimalist ambient environment they take on almost ethereal magnetism. Imagine "The Chase" remixed by David James (Aphex Twin) and you're beginning to get there.

These pieces are short, and they rarely have more than a couple ideas apiece. They are, in fact, fragments. But taken as a whole (and especially taking both albums together at once), it's easier to understand MacLachlan's ambition. The pieces seem to be in conversation with each other, and that and the generous spaces between the sounds greatly humanizes this work.

Not one for those who can't fathom how blips and blurbs, no matter how massaged, relate to and even explain the human condition. Rather, this is a set for those who like to let their mind wander and perhaps arrive at a totally unexpected destination. Exceptionally ruminative and expressive. This is one of the most beautiful albums of the year.
