11/16/23:
Bring on the horns

There are few sounds in music as satisfying as rock'n'soul done right. Ike and Tina, Sly and the Family, you get the idea. The Inciters incorporate a stellar horn section and a solid dedication to the upbeat, bright Motown sound. That's all well and good, but they also add solid writing and committed performances. Even so, this could sound like a bland cover band.

Instead, it sounds like the sort of band that might actually burn down the house. The horns are more than window dressing; they often take the fore. And while this isn't a live album, it sure has the feel of one.

The mix is a bit bass-heavy, which does differentiate the Inciters from their influences, who wouldn't dare pump the bass like this for fear of skipping the needle. All the better for getting folks on the floor, something I imagine the Inciters do almost immediately.

I haven't heard an album this fun in quite a while. There's a reason this sound never goes out of style. When done well, it can pretty wipe the floor with anything else. The Inciters are ten strong, but they sound like a hundred. Quite the workout.
