Cold fusion

Taking the chilly precision of old-school techno, the mind-expanding elements of the ambient and a generally inventive path around the electronic universe, EbE404 proves its mastery on its second full-length. Its first album (released almost three years ago) was a marvel. This set surpasses its predecessor in every way.

Dark Ice Days
(Give/Take)

Abstract enough to facilitate plenty of constructive spacing out and full of beats that require movement. The most impressive thing about these lengthy pieces is the breadth of their ambitions. While much of the sonic palette is rooted in the mid-90s, these compositions are thoroughly modern. There is a playfulness and intense sensibility that feels more current.

And boy, the sound is atmospheric. Headphones totally enhance the effect. Turn off the lights and go full sensory depravation (except for the music, of course). It's not just a question of volume. There is so much space built into the sound that it demands exploration.

Wander if you must, but follow the beats home. EbE404 is just bouncy enough to intrigue the mainstream, but its heart is in ambient exploration. Few have the ambition to create something this dense and diffuse. Fewer pull it off. EbE404 has now done it twice. Exceptional.
