Bando what?

First, some nomenclature. The most distinctive sound propagated by (sic)Trio is Adolfo Trepiana's bandoneon. A bandoneon is not an accordion, but rather another form of concertina popular in Argentina and Uruguay. With the other two members on piano and drums, this is an especially percussive trio.

Noel Morroni's piano is much more of a rhythm instrument than it might be in other jazz outfits. Serving both as a proxy for bass and a counterpoint to the drums, Morroni establishes the stage for each song. Ignacio Coppolecchia's drums keep the pieces bubbling along, but they aren't given as much room to roam.

Indeed, this is a showcase for Trepiana. His technical skill is impressive, and he whirls through his paces with style. As he is responsible for almost all of the melodic work, in the end the songs rise and fall with him.

Mostly rise. This is an unusual jazz album, both in its reliance on the bandoneon and the structure of its songs. Very much on the prog side of jazz, but with acoustic (and idiosyncratic) instrumentation. This album certainly reflects its native Buenos Aires. I haven't heard anything quite like it. A welcome escape into another world.
