7/28/22:
Let there be light

Hurry Up released its first album back in 2015. With two members of the Thermals and a Bang, the pedigree was strong and the album stronger. And then came the backburner. A single arrived in 2018 ("You Can't Wait", included on this set) and then, well, you know.

But this isn't a Covid album. It was recorded in the "before" days, but awaited release until touring opportunities opened up again. These songs are fresh, bracing and clear, each taking on the persona of the member doing the singing (all three are adept wailers). Beneath the raucous exterior lie plenty of hooks. The Riot Grrrl influence is apparent, but hardly determinative.

Rather, this is a blistering 13-song set that starts fast, mashes the pedal, rumbles over 57 miles of bad road and somehow nails a three-point landing. That's way too many automotive metaphors for one sentence, and I apologize. Hurry Up, however, has no need to feel contrite.

Another solid set, even if it arrives seven years on. With any luck, Hurry Up will find its way back to the road, where it can inspire even more carnage. If there is another album this year that brings such raggedy joy, I haven't heard it. Absolutely thrilling.
