6/24/22:
Meet you in the pit

Seven new songs from Vancouver punkers Bishops Green. This is straightforward throttle-punk with hooks. Yes, the bridge comes at just the right place (and in the correct key), and you've heard all of this before. Just not done nearly so well.

Bishops Green
Black Skies EP
(Pirates Press)

Hard to really call music this loud "comfortable", but Bishops Green settles in and rips away. I've said it a thousand times, but it's really hard to make music sound simple and offhanded. These songs are tightly-wound and played with exuberance. The riffage is sublime, and the raggedy harmonies are like a scratchy blanket on a cool evening.

Perhaps most impressive, though, is how these songs each occupy a slightly different corner. Yeah, the formula is established and Bishops Green isn't inclined to change it. But it sure knows how to find plenty of color between the lines.

And the sound... it's almost juicy. This EP oozes power and panache. A full-length would have been great, but if you only have seven great songs at the ready, then that's all there is. If you need a pick-me-up, this is the set for you. A real dose of happiness.
