11/1/21:
Right on time

Less a work of protest than one simply holding up a mirror, this new album from Nathan Bell paints a harrowing picture of our times. One can only wish that it weren't so true.

Red, White and American Blues (It Couldn't Happen Here)
(Need to Know)

Bell's musical approach is as fine a definition of "americana" as exists. His sound is based in the acoustic blues, but he branches out significantly. By the time we get to the title track, it's hardly a surprise to hear Bell echo Gil Scott Heron (and dedicate the song to him as well).

While the lyrics of the songs are searing, the music is just as strong. Blues for America is hardly a new concept, but the pain evident in the acoustic guitar licks that drive this album brings a burning urgency. This album is easy to listen to, but hard to hear.

What do we do now? Bell doesn't try to answer that question. He's just painted a picture that no one wants to see. Maybe someday we'll look back at these times and wonder what we were all so worried about. One listen to this album, and we will remember--and we must remember.
