9/6/21:
An image of greatness

Fernando Isasti (drums), Ernesto Jodos (piano) and Juan Bayon (bass) inhabit this trio. These highly technical pieces are remarkable for their restraint. The inventiveness is obvious, but these three don't play incendiary jazz. Rather, they express their ideas with a stylish passion and sneaky virtuosity.

This is Isasti's first time out leading a group, though as a drummer I'm sure he has been the backbone plenty often. These are his compositions, and he creates solid structures that leave plenty of room for expression. These aren't obvious grabbers, but I found it difficult to walk away from their contemplative power.

There are moments when it feels like the trio is about to set off into fully improvised territory. But these are compositions, and the center always holds. The ferment is impressive, and the offhanded style lends an even more familiar sound.

These songs just kept winding their way around my ears until my brain as fully ensnared. Absolutely gorgeous, and thoughtful to boot. Quite a revelation. Jump in feet first. The water is just fine.
