7/15/21:
Three for the road

It's hard to nail down this sound. Is it psychedelic surf? Morricone rock? Well, apparently it's an homage to Takeshi Terauchi, a Japanese guitarist and composer. I wish that helped me, but there are limits to my musical knowledge.

The Routes
Instrumentals II
(Groovie Records)

This instrumental set (yes, the title is, in fact, descriptive) does have a bit of a Dick Dale feel, but the late 60s intrude as well. I don't think anyone is complaining. These songs take a well-worn path and blast it off the cliff.

Totally enjoyable as is, but an extended listen finds cool influences from unexpected areas. There's a bit of atonality from time to time, and the rhythms branch out a bit from the norm. The changes are subtle, but they are indicative of the adventurousness of this trio.

And I really should find me some Terauchi. The Routes have laid down another stellar set. A totally enthralling set of summer songs with just enough depth to really make this set soar. Blistering and wavy.
