5/27/21:
Chunks in the froth

Kinda fitting that I am reviewing this as Brood X is emerging outside of my house. Having grown up in the Midwest and its plentiful annual cicadas, I do not fear these critters. Cicada the Burrower, however? I think some fear is in order.

Whipping jazz, easy listening, black metal and shoegaze pop into a blistering, frothy combination is no easy task. Cameron Davis has been wandering these waters for some time, but this set finds her sound coalescing into something spectacular. The musicianship is first rate, and the terror these songs induce is all too real.

The black metal guitars are used to full effect and not just as a sonic scrim. Indeed, the curtains remain largely open, allowing all of the disparate parts to hold court simultaneously. These thoughts don’t always compliment each other, but they do seem to converse. I’m pretty sure that’s the whole point.

Everyone has conflicts within. As a transgender woman, Davis has obviously wrestled with her share. The whipsaw movements of this album are a reflection of the opposing feelings we all have. Sometimes they can be resolved, and sometimes they can’t. But the conversation is always necessary. A searing accomplishment.
