The thing is the thing

Jan Weber is a German film composer who, on occasion, releases albums as Art Noir. He had begun work on this album in 2015 when he was diagnosed with ALS. That this project was completed at all is pretty amazing.

Weber has always preferred the chilly side of electronic music, and this album continues in that vein. There are some hints of brightness, but this isn't an "I will overcome' album, nor is it one of despair. The clinical nature of the sound allows for a more straightforward exploration of sound. Nadine Stelzer adds vocals on some tracks, which brings another layer of humanity.

I suppose Weber's backstory might make this album more compelling, but I was knocked out even before I knew about that. It's quite difficult to create music this cool that still manages to connect. Underneath the exterior lies a warm heart.

A few weeks ago I wondered out loud if I would lose my current fascination with abstract electronic music and metal. I guess not. Art Noir satisfies my current need for the former. I imagine I'll come across another fix in a short while. For now, though, I'm all in here. Extravagant and incisive.
