1/28/21:
Better than it ever was

Almost 16 years ago I wrote about Lorna's first album, Static Patterns and Souvenirs, and it's amazing how much of what I wrote then still applies. Lorna still creates music of otherworldly beauty that floats above time and space to inhabit a realm of its own.

Dusky vocals, indie pop beats and semi-orchestral arrangements conspire to whip up this froth that stands with the force of a mountain. I think it is the flute and three-piece string section that really anchors these songs, proving a timbre (and fragility) that even the best electronics can't match.

Like I said, however, that fragility is a mirage. These songs are tightly and intricately crafted, and the production doesn't allow any element to disappear. There's a united front of sound, one that lifts the achingly gorgeous melodies to their astonishing heights.

This is the best Lorna album I've heard in ages, though I haven't gone all the way back yet. Perhaps it was the COVID recording conditions or maybe something as simple as experience. Whatever the reason, Lorna raised the bar on this set. Sumptuous.
