3/19/20:
It's not from IKEA, it's for IKEA

An exercise in sonic absurdity, the song titles hew to the high concept of the album title (and artist name, for that matter). So we have "Music for a Chair" and "Music for an Ottoman" and "Music for a Nightstand." And so forth.

Music for Furniture
(Don't Be Nasty)

These excursions into what I like to call the video game branch of electronic music (Moog-ish, with clean lines and simple arrangements) are deceptively superficial. Well, that's not quite right. Each piece has a bass line and a treble line. There are few (if any) chords. There is no percussion. Just two keyboard(ish) lines playing off each other at a steady tempo.

The inventiveness within such basic surroundings is impressive. These songs are constructed as journeys, so there are no verses or choruses (even within instrumentals, such structure is common). Sometimes the lines build on each other, and sometimes they simply move on. I found it difficult to predict the path of any individual song.

That makes for slightly uncomfortable listening. And that's also why I came to adore this project. The label's notes say "Music for Furniture is not for human consumption. It's for furniture." A perfectly absurd statement to go along with some of the oddest music I've heard in a while. Totally refreshing.
