2/6/20: Lenz flare Frank Lenz has played with a lot of artists over the last three decades. I became aware of him with his band Fold Zandura (from the late 90s) and his first album, 2001's The Hot Stuff. He's a drummer by trade, but he's always found his way into other sounds.
I don't like everything Lenz has done over the years, but I do appreciate his adventurous spirit. He never stands still. This album is more drum-reliant than most of his stuff (I suppose the fact that the first track is called "Drumb Solo" might be a tell), but he's not afraid to lose touch with rhythm entirely at times. Some of these tracks are Lenz at his trippiest. I'm always amazed when someone is able to stay (mostly) true to oneself and still make a go of it as an artist. Lenz still pays the bills with session work, but every few years he releases something of his own. As loopy as ever, with just enough center. This is one Lenz project I can wholeheartedly endorse. I'm always down for thoughtful music played with a sense of fun. Exceedingly rewarding. |
