12/12/19:
Doomed to success

Clouds Taste Satanic have released their second album of 20-minute songs of the year. I've heard more than one wag say something like "Hell, if you let me dick around for twenty minutes, I'll give you two songs, too." Um, okay. You just won't give me songs like this.

Clouds Taste Satanic
Second Sight
(self-released)

Doom, stoner rock, heavy metal. Yes, and more. Clouds Taste Satanic doesn't write 20-minute songs comprised of smaller movements. These are songs that churn and bludgeon along a well-defined path for the full twenty. There are multiple guitar solos (more melodic than speedy; almost bluesy at times), explorations along the axis and easy-to-identify arcs. These are, in fact, songs.

And yes, they're heavy. The riffage is sublime. The sound is rich and full. Welcome to loud music heaven. Vocals? Who needs 'em? Music that throttles and inspires in equal measure has no need of lyrical explanation. This stuff goes right to the heart. There are those for whom this is not their cup of tea. They need to start liking tea. But I'm not going to force it down their throats . . . yet.

Yes, these guys are Brooklyn hipsters. Don't hold it against them. They're easily the most exciting band I've heard plying these waters in years. The writing and musicianship are first rate, and the adrenaline rush is sublime. Let the pain wash over you. It won't take a minute before you're begging for more. Brilliant stuff.
