11/4/19: Just [sing] it Lauren Lee plays piano. And she sings. But unlike other jazz vocalists, Lee also uses her voice as an instrument. She occasionally scats, but more often she creates new lines with her voice, adding an entirely different dimension to the songs. The results are striking; those not prepared might be a bit disconcerted.
Lee's vocal work is smart. Her voice is strong, but not particularly distinctive. Her obvious talent is composition and piano playing. The vocals are a (big) add-on plus. This is a wonderful example of someone taking what she has and fashioning a sound that is much more than the sum of its parts. There are many ways to enjoy this album. Lee's inventive pieces are a joy, and her piano playing is deft and expressive. And then there are her vocals, which are a treat. Quite the ear tickler. |
