Boring in

Drew Miller makes minimalist electronic music. The sort of stuff that should, one might think, be restive and such. But I think his title is ironic. At least, that's how things sound to me.

Brother Saturn
music for sleep
(Symbolic Insight)

Yes, this is a quiet album. Turn it up to 11, and it's still quiet. Meditative, even. But not conducive to rest, per se. Ideas keep seeping out, little thoughts that slowly evolve into big ones. These aren't abstract works. Miller knows exactly what he's doing. His notion of the ambient is a structured universe.

A long, long time ago, my wife and I were preparing for the birth of our first child. We did all the stuff first-timers do: classes, birth plans, etc. One of the big suggestions was music. I picked stuff that was calm, but not sleep-inducing. It was fine. But if I had to pick something today, this album would definitely be on the list.

Spacey without being spaced out. Ambient without falling into the background. Calm without being somnambulant. I could fall asleep to this (with three kids, I can fall asleep to the sound of nuclear bombs going off), but I would never want to. This is music for thought.
