8/5/19: Wide on the range The first track (and first single) from this album is a solid, modestly up-tempo americana rambler. I was prepared to settle in for a comfy set.
The second track explodes that idea. "Capsized" has an insistent, electronic R&B vibe. LaRocca's voice doesn't shift much, but the canvas is completely new. The rest of the album continues apace, touching base with more traditional americana sounds while veering into lands rarely seen by the genre. Reggae, jazz, rock, whatever. LaRocca's ear is fearless. The strength of LaRocca's voice is its strength. She projects power at any volume, and while that does limit her expressiveness at times, she is able to maintain a sense of self even as her songs roam. Indeed, LaRocca makes it clear that her imagination cannot be tamed. She rides well past the fences and off into the vast prairies. Categorize her at your own risk. Enjoy at your leisure. |
