The title is correct, both in the way normal people might arrange the words and in the order they are given. But it also gives a hint of the greater truth: This is jazz.

this jazz not is
(Symbolic Insight)

Or rather, a fusion of 70s jazz fusion and the ambient. The virtuosic performances here are Wesley Davis's arranging and production. These pieces exist in deep space, but they do have elements of jazz and rock construction piped into their electronic frameworks.

Despite the highly conceptual nature of the pieces, these are no random experiments thrown together with little thought. Rather, each piece has its own logical progression, and the album as a whole has been sequenced in such a way as to increase the effect of its ideas.

I think the processing here is what would most gall jazz purists. This isn't a "band", though Davis does use other players for much of his sound. This is purely processed stuff--not unlike the way that Bitches Brew came together so many years ago. This set is not so revolutionary, but it is quietly groundbreaking.
