5/27/19:
More is more, sometimes

The Leisure Society plays old school melodic arty pop-rock. Not quite chamber-pop, but they do have a flute. This double set features one slab of easily recognizable songs (Arrivals) and another slab of more adventurous songs (Departures).

(Ego Drain)

The difference between the two isn't particularly pronounced, but Departures is more awkward and intimate, and those are the songs that stick with me better. I'm not exactly put off by the smooth gorgeousness of Arrivals, but I was wondering where it was going. I got my answer.

The band utilizes a greater sonic palette than in the past, finding a wide dynamic range and a more full feel. A double album is, by default, an ambitious undertaking. The production and mixing here help to fulfill that mission.

I found more and more with each listen. This one will quietly win over listeners. The seeming simplicity gives way to something fuller and more realized. More than worth the two pieces of vinyl.
