Cool boogie

Oh disco, what have you wrought? What began as an experiment in seeing how long a DJ could keep a single groove going on the dance floor turned into a pop revolution, complete with the inevitable backlash and reinvention. And now, more than forty years later, here's Gold Casio to prove that disco can never be killed.

Sinners EP
(Freakout)

These songs are length of pop songs, but they are far more adventurous. A massive dose of playful creativity lies within these grooves, and there's more than a hint of the chill-down new wave of New Order. That swerving between buoyant bliss and arch self-examination lends a wonderful edge.

I like the interplay between those impulses. Gold Casio dips its toes in many pools, but it never quite dives in. Here's to hoping the band never does define itself in any narrow way. The expansive ideas and feel of this set are exhilarating.

Of course, it is possible to get lost in the swirl without pondering the sounds and the message of the lyrics. That's fine, but to do that is to miss out on what's really important here. Enjoyable on all levels.
